Rent control just got killed, not by voters, and not because people didn't want it. Over 124,000 signatures were collected, thousands of volunteers in every corner of this state, years of organizing to finally give people a say on whether they can afford to stay in their own homes.

This is because a handful of private equity-backed real estate investment corporations looked at a ballot fight they were about to lose and did what corporate landlords always do; they threw money at the problem. They found some incredibly obscure constitutional technicality about a one-line exemption for units operated for religious purposes (as well as educational and non-profit purposes), and they sued their way out of having to face us voters. According to AG Campbell who certified the ballot question, “it was only the second time that the court has reviewed this [legal] standard.”

60% of Massachusetts voters supports rent control. They knew they couldn't win at the ballot box so they played the corporate playbook of throwing every legal maneuver at the wall hoping that one sticks.

Rents are still unaffordable. Nothing about this ruling changes any of that. The only people who won are the ones who benefit from this exploitative status quo.

So now the fight moves back to Beacon Hill. There is pending rent control legislation that we have the power to implement. We need more people who won't fold when the real estate lobby shows up with their checkbooks. We need more people who have been in this fight and are not going anywhere. That's what this campaign is about.
